机构简介:

The Biology Department at York accepted its first undergraduates in 1965 and moved to its present buildings in 1968. Over the years it has grown enormously, with the opening of the £21.6M Biosciences building in 2003, part of which houses our innovative Technology Facility together with the York Structural Biology Laboratory (YSBL ). Our most recent expansion, the £5M extension of the Centre for Immunology and Infection (CII ), opened in 2010. We research and teach across the whole spectrum of biological sciences – from molecular analysis of human diseases to understanding the global environment. This wide range facilitates an array of novel research collaborations within the Department and externally, and gives our teaching breadth, depth and immediacy.

  Teaching and Research

Our status as one of the UK’s elite university biological sciences departments is supported by established metrics that relate to both research and teaching. The most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008 placed Biology at York in equal first place among broad-spectrum biological sciences departments with respect to the 25% of our output that was described as"world-leading". As a component part of the RAE, we were rated second in the UK for our research environment. In teaching, we have retained a position in the top five biological sciences programmes in the UK according to the most widely-used indicators published by The Times and * and we score highly for student satisfaction in the National Students Survey. These results, together with those of the RAE, place the Department in a leading position in the UK in offering outstanding teaching in a front-rank research environment.
